Number Target Challenge Level 6: Intermediate Starter | 20 Maths Puzzles
Number Target Challenge Level 6: Intermediate Starter | 20 Maths Puzzles
20 intermediate number-target puzzles introducing regular use of two large numbers, bigger targets and more demanding strategic calculation. Level 6 marks the beginning of the intermediate phase. Pupils encounter two large numbers more regularly and must make more deliberate decisions about whether to combine, divide, preserve or adapt them. Larger targets make random trial-and-error approaches less effective. Pupils are encouraged to identify useful factors, multiples and differences before committing to a route. The resource includes: 20 intermediate number-target puzzles Timer-enabled PowerPoint presentation Macro-free PPTX fallback Printable PDF version Solver-verified puzzle set Progressive challenge within the level The puzzles are suitable for KS3 starters, upper-KS2 extension, numeracy intervention, revision, enrichment, maths clubs or team competitions. They can also support discussion about efficient calculation and choosing between mental and written methods. Teachers can differentiate the task by allowing pupils to work collaboratively, supplying a useful first step or challenging stronger pupils to find alternative routes. Level 6 begins the second five-level stage of the complete programme. Levels 6–10 increase the importance of grouping, factor recognition, operation order and purposeful construction of intermediate numbers.
