20 advanced number-target puzzles introducing regular use of three large numbers, larger targets and deeper multi-step strategic reasoning. Level 11 begins the advanced phase of the Number Target Challenge programme. Three large numbers are used more regularly, changing the way pupils must approach each puzzle. Large numbers can provide powerful routes towards the target, but they can also become difficult to control. Pupils must decide whether to multiply them, divide them, create a difference or retain one for a later adjustment. They also create meaningful opportunities for pupils to explain why one route is more productive than another. Teachers can support pupils by encouraging them to work backwards from the target or list possible intermediate values before calculating. Level 11 is the first of five advanced levels, leading towards increasingly constrained puzzles with fewer obvious routes.
